Iliac Crest – Who’d have guessed

Jan 18, 12 Iliac Crest – Who’d have guessed

I went to the Doctors last week, not sure if I told you before but I have been having some trouble with my hip, well I call it my hip, it’s at the top of my leg on the left hand side.  Turns out it is my Iliac Crest.

I’m pretty certain this goes back ten years to when I was expecting my beloved daughter and stumbled over the edge of the rug.  It was quite late on in pregnancy, I didn’t actually fall, but I did end up on crutches for the last few weeks, it was too painful to walk anywhere without them.  Anyone who know’s me can imaging what I thought of the midwife who induced me and told me to spend the rest of the day walking round.  Let’s just say she nearly ended up wearing one of the crutches!  Anyway bundle of joy arrives and hip problem disappears, or rather goes into hiding for a long time.

It first reappeared back in 2008 when I was doing the dreaded Thirsk 10.  Great going the first five miles but when I stopped at the water station the whole hip suddenly went into pain and I had to limp to the finish.  I blamed the camber on the road but who knows.

I’ve noticed it again since I started upping the mileage in preparation for this weekends Brass Monkey Half Marathon, got all the way up to 9.5 miles at the beginning of December, still can’t believe I managed that, keep pinching myself in case it’s a dream.

After nearly  a month of not running thanks to the lurgy I managed a couple of 3.5 milers on Boxing Day and New Years Day, then an 8.6 miler a couple of weeks ago.  All of which left me feeling very stiff after the event.  Last weekend was the launch of the York parkrun and I got my second best 5k time, which I am over the moon with as am still rather lurgy ridden.

Plans for running with club this evening are out the window, feel rough today and everything is now focussed on getting better for Sunday.  Being the stubborn northern lass that I am I am determined to be well enough to participate.

There was a bit of a wobble when the race pack advised a 2:45 cut off, both Cathy and I are expecting to be nearer the 3 hour mark but we’ve got our heads around it and decided we will finish however long it takes, let’s just not worry about cut offs, although it would be nice if someone was still there to greet us when we finish.

So the physio referral has been sent off, I am taking it as easy as I can this week and my race number has arrived.

Any one have some stretches to help with Iliac Crest? It’s at the front not the back.
